FAQs

The questions we hear most, answered straight. If yours is not here, just ask us directly.

Working with us

What does The Tech Thingy actually do?

We are a product engineering studio in Mumbai. We build web and mobile apps, SaaS platforms, Shopify stores, custom software and AI systems, and we run digital marketing. In plain terms: whatever software your business runs on, we can design, build and keep it running.

How do I start a project with you?

Book a free call or send a short brief through the contact form. We will have a real conversation about what you are trying to do, then map out scope and share a plan and an estimate. No pitch decks, no NDAs on call one.

Who will I actually be talking to?

The people building your product, not an account manager relaying messages. The Tech Thingy is founder-led, and you deal with the team doing the work.

I am not technical. Is that a problem?

No, it is who we are built for. Most of our clients run brands, stores, clinics and firms, not software companies. Translating what your business needs into what gets built is our job, not yours, and we explain things in language you do not need a degree to follow.

What industries do you work with?

Ecommerce and D2C brands, retail and operations, fashion, health and clinics, real estate, professional services, analytics and more, across 12+ industries. We focus on the outcome rather than the vertical.

Can you take over a project someone else started?

Often, yes. We will review what exists and be honest about whether it is worth continuing or cleaner to restart. Either way you get a straight answer, not a sales pitch.

Pricing and payments

How much will my project cost?

It depends on the work, and we scope it in writing before you commit. A focused piece like a landing page or an audit starts from ₹10K; a full build is priced to what it actually needs. You will know the number before we start.

How do I get a quote?

Send a short brief through the contact form or book a call. We usually reply within one to two business days to ask the right questions and share a tailored estimate.

Do you have fixed packages or is everything custom?

Both. Our products, like The Laundry Thingy, have clear monthly plans. Client projects are scoped to the work, because custom software is not a product with a single price tag.

Are there any hidden costs or markups?

No. Scope is agreed in writing, and we do not mark up third-party services. If something is a separate cost, such as a paid app or hosting, we tell you upfront rather than burying it in an invoice.

How does payment work?

Typically in milestones tied to what is delivered, agreed before we start. For products, plans are billed monthly. We are straight about the terms in the proposal.

Timelines

How long will my project take?

A starter website is usually two to three weeks; a larger site or store four to eight; a mobile app five to eight to a first release; custom software is phased. Timelines run from content handover, not from the kickoff call.

Why does content handover matter for the timeline?

Because a build waits on your copy, images and catalogue. The faster those arrive, the faster you launch. We can help shape the content, but the clock effectively starts when it is in hand.

How do you keep a project on schedule?

We work in short cycles with clear milestones and build on a live preview URL you can watch, so progress is visible and there are no big-reveal surprises. If a trade-off is needed, you hear about it early.

Can you work to a hard deadline?

Usually, if it is realistic for the scope. We will tell you honestly whether a date is achievable rather than promising it and missing, and we will show you what can ship by then if the full build cannot.

Technology

What do you build with?

Primarily Next.js, React, TypeScript and Node on the web, Flutter or React Native for mobile, and modern cloud infrastructure. We choose the stack that suits your project and budget rather than forcing one tool onto everything.

Do you use WordPress or Shopify?

Shopify, yes, for commerce brands, with custom themes rather than bought templates. For everything else we default to Next.js, which is faster and more secure than WordPress. If WordPress is genuinely the right fit, we will say so.

Which platforms do you build apps for?

iOS and Android, built cross-platform from one codebase so you reach both stores without paying to build and maintain two separate apps. We also handle store submission and release.

Can you add AI to my product?

Yes. We build AI integrations and automations that remove real manual work, rather than bolting on a chatbot for the sake of it. We start from the problem, not the buzzword.

How do you handle security and data?

Secure by design: HTTPS, secure APIs, encrypted storage where needed, least-privilege access and regular dependency and security checks. Your data is yours, and export is available.

Can you improve or migrate my existing site or system?

Yes. Redesigns, performance tuning, accessibility, conversion work and safe migrations, including from another platform with redirects set up so you keep your search rankings.

Support and handover

Who owns the code and the accounts?

You do, from day one. Every account, the code and the infrastructure are in your name. There is no lock-in, and any competent team can pick up what we built.

Do you support the product after launch?

Yes. Maintenance and support are available, from a light SLA to ongoing iteration alongside your team. But the work is built to be maintainable by anyone, so you are never trapped with us.

What do you hand over at the end?

Clean, documented code, every account in your name, and where relevant a design system, specs and analytics wired up. You leave with everything needed to run and extend the product.

What if something breaks?

On a support plan we handle it. Even without one, because you own everything and it is documented, any developer can fix it. For infrastructure we can set up monitoring so problems surface before your customers hit them.

Tell us what you’re building.

A real conversation about your business and whether we’re the right team to help. Free, and no obligation either way.
